Coffee Prince — aka — Okay, seriously, what the hell, Korea? Is this going to become a trend here?
First off, ya’ll, I am so tired. I am also sort of sunburned, imagine me saying this all in Britney Spears English. I just hit up Agua Verde on Portage Bay where friends and I kayaked for a while before climbing upstairs to gorge outselves on really wonderfully fresh Mexican food and eat salsa until it came out of our ears — fabulous. So it’s with sore arms I sit down to write you about my NEWEST TRUE LOVE.
Last time I talked about kdramas, I was talking about the appallingly bad Witch Amusement, which actually took bad to such a transcendental place I’m pretty sure it was doing shots with Keats. In the past, I have also mentioned my fascination with the uneven but overall fantastic Goong, which re-imagined Korea into unified country with a constitutional monarchy — for the super important purpose of there being a royal love story. And since I have a penchant for following the careers of people I have been impressed with in the past, of course I followed up on Yoon Eun Hye.
Who is now in something called Coffee Prince.
Guys? The gay theme started by Witch Amusement? Is continuing in Coffee Prince. I am without words. It all starts with a picture. Of dudes smooching. I know.
Choi Han Kyu (dude) is the grandson slash heir of a coffee empire who has playboyed around in America while working on his “film production career.” The sum total of his work (so far, in episode two, to be fair) has been a photograph of him getting smooched on by a cute albeit wildly-intoxicated looking American boy. Trapped now by his mother and grandmothers’ worries that (a) he’s gay and (b) he’s a playboy, he’s being bullied into tons of blind dates to try and find the future missus — which is when his earlier inauspicious and mostly-accidental meetings with Go Eun Chan (dudette, but looks completely like a pretty-boy dude) come into play: he thinks Eun Chan is a boy and offer to pay him/her $100 per event to pretend to be his boyfriend. Ya’ll I am not making this shit up. It is kind of amazing to me, too.

My point is: holy crapola folks: this Coffee Prince thing might be an interesting run to end all interesting runs.

I’m in love right now. My only weakness? Inability to remember character names so I have mentally been calling it Ouran Host Club/Antique Bakery crossover AU. I think this is going to end with me hooked on kdrama. You always have the good crack.

Hey! I am totally adoring Coffee Prince. WANT MOAR SUBS NOW.
Also, what is up with Korea’s airing schedule? It seems downright cruel to air new episodes on both Monday and Tuesday nights, meaning that those of us linguistically-challenged fans following the show have to endure waiting for subs while just *knowing* that there are more eps out there already!
