I always forget I have to share O2 with asshat boys until it’s too late.

I was, as is my wont, cruising my various and sundry interests on the internet (penguin bukkake, jokes about necrophilia, seeking employment, etc. etc.) when I came across this review for an OAV (translation to the non-anime-ers among us: “only available on video,” but not the same beast as “straight to DVD” in the Western world, mind you) for one of my most favorite somewhat shameful but all the same TOTALLY AWESOME loves, Haru wo Daite Ita (1). (Which is a manga series/OAV series about porn stars who fall in love. Okay, no! Come back here! Stop google searching and trolling on IRC and COME BACK HERE and LET ME MAKE MY POINT. JESUS. THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF TIME FOR THAT LATER. GOD.)

My point is actually not about “Winter Cicada” (2) or indeed, any Haru wo Daite Ita related shenaniganry at all so much as wondering, “Why the hate?”

God knows that as an enlightened an internet-ready female there are many things traditional XX chromosome carriers are not supposed to like that I love a whole bunch: dicks, chicks, double-dicking, saying the word, dick, also the word cock, pornography, erotica, comics about people playing video games — oh yeah, and also uh, finance. Etcetera etcetera. But the point is my interests are varied. Some of the first erotica I ever read — nobody is allowed to hold this against me — was X-Files Marita/Scully femmeslash, and folks? It was hott. Then there was also that amazing (well, okay, in my memory, it was amazing, but once upon a time, I thought my 12-year-old self-insertion stories were amazing, too) story where Mulder catches Scully outside a dyke bar and is like, “Dude, what the fuck?” and Scully is like, “Frankly, I’d rather not get pregnant. And also, penises tend to pass disease. Plus, I enjoy the rugmunching.” Or something to that effect. But I also remember vividly a story called “Cheapened Things” by MD1016 (or something like that) where Mulder and Scully have semi-awful sex in a motel bed (3).

A review of good NC-17 rated tomfoolery is really a dance through the spectrum of sexuality: the things human being find hot are never really limited to gender — not at their most essential. It’s heat and friction and that sweat-sting in your eyes, how skin and curves and the heat and weight of bone feels wrapped in muscle — the amazing softness and comforting mass of another person (or three!). It’s sensation, and you can be deaf and blind and still drowning in all the things that make sex hot — gender regardless.

I guess I’m privileged in that I’m surrounded by women — amazing writers at that — who agree with me and cheerfully pump out (hah! pump! yeah, shut up, I know I’m 14) smutty gem after smutty gem, with plots and points and beautiful imagery and a whole lot of fucking. More than insulted at this point, I’m sad for people who rule out an entire genre of erotica, of fiction, of life in general.

(1) Haru wo Daite Ita is, seriously I’m not kidding, an explicit manga series by Nitta Youka (Youka Nitta, in Western name order) about two porn stars who fall in love. Dark-haired and series Iwaki Kyousuke hates mouthy blond upstart Katou Youji — but when they’re both called to an audition for a real life movie, their opportunity to get out of the world of adult videos, their rivalry comes to a head. The exec producer asks them to do a real life audition — something perfect for their pedigrees in skin flicks: fuck on demand. That’s chapter one. There’re now going on 10 volumes of the story that arcs out after they break out of the adult entertainment industry and follows them through their growing professional fame, and also, HOW THEY FALL IN LOVE AND GET MARRIED. I’M NOT KIDDING. THEY WEAR SOME SPEEDOS IN THERE SOMEWHERE, TOO. LOOK I HELD IN MY SHALLOW UNTIL ALL THE WAY HERE, OKAY? IT WAS HARD. Available from BeBeautiful manga — and guys? When I say explicit? I mean explicit. HOTT EXPLICIT.

(2) A story within a story, sort of — a movie that Iwaki and Katou both end up working on together in the comic where they play protagonists and lovers. Brace yourself for the meta here: the OAV is straight up the “film” you read/see them filming in the manga. As I told Hoyden, I am EMBARRASSINGLY PSYCHED ABOUT THIS.

(3) Because I’m sure more than I got nostalgic and find-y: Cheapened Things by MD1016 — and — ScullySlash. GO NUTS.

I am shallow because I totally read it for the pretty pretty art (porn included), but if you ever feel up to doing a meta I would be all eyes.

I love Haru wo Daiteita. My friend introduced me to it five years ago as “Ok, so they’re both male porn stars. In LOVE. Who then go onto become successful dorama actors!” to which I retorted, “You’re shitting me!” and refused to even touch it, as there was no way such a manga could even exist.

Three years later, I bought the whole series and avidly read it even though my Japanese reading skills are crap (I could read the sound effects for the sex scenes). I hope the series goes on until Iwaki and Katou are elderly and creaky and the latter still insists on have sex though I’m not sure if even Nitta Youka could make that hot.

“Mulder,” she tried to coo in the wake of his howling, “Mulder wake up.”

There is not enough WTF in the world for this.
